The Best Way To Make Decisions
Decisions aren't always easy, but they don't have to feel impossible.
It’s your Monday leadership meeting and a major decision needs to be made.
After hearing all the information, everybody believes the company should move forward with the acquisition.
Opinions vary around the room, but the final decision lies with you.
As leaders of our businesses, teams or families, how do we make sure we’re making decisions effectively?
There are a few things I keep in mind when there’s a decision to be made at home or at work…
Be quick to listen and slow to respond.
God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason: So we could listen more and talk less. Gather the details required to inform the decision.
This makes who you surround yourself with really important. A skilled, knowledgable team that functions with integrity can bring much of the information you need to the table , and the best part is, you can trust it.
Separate your emotions from what is real.
We all carry emotion. We see the world through our own lens. Things of the past (how people treated us, business deals, health situations, etc.) effect how we see the world today.
All of this can easily amplify our emotions.
The goal is to be passionate about our decisions, not emotional.
What is real and what we are feeling can be two separate things. When we are thinking about a decision, our human nature is to anticipate what could happen. Some of us are wired to think about all the negative things, while others only see the positive.
Regardless of where you fall, we have to remember: ‘what if’ isn’t real. Anticipation isn’t real.
Yes, it’s wise to think through the results of our decisions prior to making them, but we have to extract as much of the emotion as possible so we can focus on the facts and what we can control.
Easier said than done, I know.
Be confidently courageous.
Expect pushback, but stay confident and courageous that you made the best decision at the time with the information you had.
You can always be respectful of someone else’s opinions without celebrating their opinions.
If the decision turns out being the wrong decision, admit your mistake, learn from it and get after it again.
Pray.
God is an incredible partner. He will provide clarity, courage and comfort. Surrender the result to Him and focus on enjoying the process.
Finance
There’s been a lot of talk about the potential changes impacting our taxes.
Here are some good thoughts and ideas to be mindful of:
Pros and Cons of Taking Social Security at Different Ages
Book Corner
Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara || 3.5 stars.
Entertaining. Good take aways for people in a service business. GREAT for restauranteurs.
The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy || 3 stars
I initially thought it was great, but it did seem a little redundant.
The Summit || May 16 & 17
The Summit distinguishes itself from other events by offering a distinctive experience for high-functioning leaders and their teams. The goal isn’t just to master high performance, but to continue functioning at continual peak performance.
